Project Overview

Outline of the Project

  • Title of the Project : PROJECT FOR FOREST CONSERVATION AND SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF FOREST RESOURCES
  • Project duration : 63 months(From July,2015 to September,2020)
  • Beneficiaries : SADC Secretariat and SADC Member States
  • Project Area : SADC Member States(16 Countries)
  • Project Purpose : To develop the capacity of the SADC Secretariat and Member States for promoting forest conservation and sustainable management of forest resources.

Background

The SADC treaty stipulates that SADC commits the Member States to promote common political values, systems, and other shared values through regional integration. The SADC forestry strategy 2010-2020 highlights following 8 Strategic Programme Areas to promote use of forest resources for food security, enhancing participatory forest management, cooperation on fire management, and needs of forest data for better management. In that context, the Project focuses especially on supporting Strategic Programme Areas 4),6),7), and 8).

  • 2).Protection of Key Water Catchment Forests
  • 3).Energy supply and rural poverty reduction

  • 6).Cooperation in trans-boundary forest and fire management
  • 7).Forest assessments and information management
  • 8).Capacity improvement in SADC

Expected Outputs

  • Output1:The capacity of SADC MSs to enhance Forest Information System is improved [Strategy 7)]
  • Output2:The capacity of SADC MSs to enhance Integrated Forest Fire Management is improved [Strategy 6)]
  • Output3:The capacity of SADC MSs to enhance Participatory Forest Management is improved [Strategy 4)]
  • Output4:The capacity of SADC Secretariat to coordinate the above 1 to 3 is improved [Strategy 8)]
